There’s fewer more demoralising experiences as a car owner than experiencing a flat car battery. However, we hope that this handy car flat battery guide can provide some solace and point you in the right direction of sorting your troublesome battery problem.
A dead car battery can surprise you out of nowhere (there’s never a good time though is there) for several reasons including:
• Temperature - cold temperatures make it more difficult for your battery to get your car started
• Journey length - frequent, short journeys make it difficult for your car to charge fully, which prematurely ages your battery
• Battery strain - the more electrical systems there are requiring battery power, the greater the strain placed upon it
• Battery condition - corrosion on battery terminals, clamps and the battery tray can lead to a reduced battery lifespan
• Battery age - as batteries become older, they become less efficient. A time will arise when the battery no longer functions as required, leaving no other option than to replace it
A dead car battery can be the result your battery being drained, but not completely discharged. This often occurs by accidentally leaving an electrical system on (commonly lights) when the engine isn’t running. You may be able to resolve this by charging your car battery.
If your car battery has completely discharged, trying to charge it up again likely isn’t going to resolve the problem. Instead, you can try jump starting your car by enlisting the help of a friend, family, fellow motorist or roadside assistance (if you have it). You can also use a power pack to jump start a battery if a second car isn’t available to help.
If you’ve charged your car and tried jump starting and it still won’t start, we’d recommend getting your car to the nearest available garage or service centre. If you’re local to our Poole site pop in and we can give your car a FREE battery check and advise on a replacement if needed.
