To best detect a problem or potential issue with your exhaust system it’s recommended to use both your ears and eyes. Here’s what you should be listening and looking out for:
One of the easiest and most obvious signs to spot that your exhaust has a problem is an excessive rumbling noise coming from the engine area. If you’ve noticed your engine getting louder or you’re turning your stereo up higher to mask the sound you may have a serious problem with your exhaust.
If you hear a rattling noise coming from your exhaust when the engine is running this if often a sign of a failing catalytic converter that will need replacing as soon as possible.
If you have felt vibrations when using your pedals, this could indicate a leak somewhere within the exhaust system. Depending upon the size of the leak you may also hear a rumbling sound whenever your engine is turned on. A tell-tale sign of a faulty exhaust system is a pool of fluid under your car.
If you’re finding yourself at the fuel pumps more often (and you’ve not changed your driving habits) you may have a problem with your exhaust system. Linking to the exhaust leak problem above, if your exhaust system has a leak it means the engine will have to work considerably harder, increasing fuel consumption.
Some external exhaust problems are easily spotted once you’ve got under your vehicle and should be treated with the same level of seriousness as an internal exhaust problem. Visual checks aren’t easy to undertake, unless you’ve got the luxury of access to a ramp. If you believe your exhaust has a problem or you want peace of mind that your exhaust is problem-free, simply drive in to our Poole site and our expert team will be able to inspect your exhaust free of charge.
