Safety shouldn’t be underestimated when purchasing a used car. Whilst many focus on fuel efficiency and power an increasing number of drivers now look at safety first and hold it of paramount importance when buying a car either for themselves or for their children.
In light of this there is greater pressure on manufacturers to release vehicles that not only appeal visually to the market but can also stand up well to tough safety tests.
It is often said that a car is only as safe as the person behind the wheel. Whilst this does hold some truth having a car that is trusted and built with safety in mind will protect you better should the worse happen. Moreover, whilst you can control what you do in your car you cannot control the actions of others around you. As the old saying goes it’s better to be safe than sorry.
To work out the safest used cars available for purchase in Britain Thatcham Research and Co-Op Insurance focused only on vehicles that cost below £15,000 and achieved a 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating for their research.
Somewhat unsurprisingly a Volvo came out on top. Lauded for placing safety above style and performance the Swedish manufacturer’s V40 model achieved a 100% safety rating back in 2012.
The V40’S Safety Pack included technology ahead of its time including lane assist and driver tiredness monitor to keep the occupants safe and legal when behind the wheel. In addition to the Safety Pack the City Safety system helped ensure safety in built up areas such as towns and cities with autonomous braking.
