As cars become faster and most importantly safer the prospect of increasing the motorway speed limit from 70mph to 80mph has become a real possibility.
Raising the speed limit was last discussed back in 2011, but any further developments were ended when ministers raised concerns regarding pollution increases arising from vehicles travelling at faster speeds.
As more drivers are opting for environmentally friendly hybrid and especially full electric vehicles (EVs), the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps - an EV owner himself - has begun exploring once more the possibility of increasing speed limits on motorways and some dual carriageways.
Mr Shapps said the following at a recent Conservative party conference: “There is an argument that, once you have increased the level of electrification, and therefore decreased or entirely removed carbon, that you might look at those things again.”
Recent campaigns argue that increasing speeds would improve productivity and road safety, whilst reducing the likelihood of congestion. The latter being music to the ears of motorists up and down the country.
