New generation VW Amarok and Ford Ranger pick-ups are set to be co-developed under Ford and Volkswagen.
Announced at the Detroit Motor Show, this alliance will see Ford build both the Amarok and Ranger and the two will share engines. However, Jim Hackett, Ford CEO, stressed that each will have its own ‘identity’ and ‘go to market strategy’.
These vehicles will go on sale from 2022, with scope for both manufacturers to collaborate on electric and self-driving cars using VW’s MEB platform.
Following the pick-up collaboration Ford is expected to design and build larger commercial vehicles for both companies, with VW focusing its efforts upon manufacturing smaller vans (think the Transit Connect and Caddy).
In 2018 Ford and VW combined to sell 1.2 million commercial vehicles. The pick-up market has also demonstrated clear signs of growth in the last five years. The alliance would help both manufacturers reduce costs and improve efficiencies to increase profits from 2023 onward.
Ford and VW – two of the world’s oldest vehicle manufacturers – are coming under increased pressure to build cleaner and more technologically advanced vehicles. It is hoped that combining forces will put them in a better position in the race to take the lead on autonomous technology.
