Roads up and down the country might be filled with green number plates if new government plans get the go-ahead.
These plans hope could be introduced as part of the government’s £1.5bn strategy to clean up road transport, boost electric car sales and reach its target of zero emissions by 2050.
Affixing green plates to cars which conform to the highest environmental standards will make them easily identifiable and make it possible for local authorities to offer benefits such as reduced parking fees or granting access for them to use bus lanes.
The Department for Transport (DfT) launched a consultation earlier this morning and sees green plates as a good way of increasing electric vehicle ownership, following successful trials in Ontario, Canada.
Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary said: “Green number plates are a really positive and exciting way to help everyone recognise the increasing number of electric vehicles on our roads.
“By increasing awareness of these vehicles and the benefits they bring to their drivers and our environment, we will turbo-charge the zero-emission revolution.”
Three number plate designs are being considered. Are you a fan of the proposed plates? Is their introduction likely to sway you to become an electric car owner? Let us know on our Facebook page.
