Are you prone to a bit of road rage? If you’ve got a hot temper behind the wheel you might want to think twice about acting out, as your frustrations could land you a hefty £1000 fine.
Under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, using hand gestures, such as sticking your middle finger up against fellow motorists is classed as “disorderly conduct” and if caught could result in a fine of 75% of a week’s wages, capped at £1000.
Using hand gestures could also land you with three penalty points in addition to a £1000 fine if you are adjudged to not be in “full control of your vehicle”, compounding the misery you’ll endure after an outburst.
AA Head of Roads Policy, Jack Cousens suggests the following for how to remain calm and avoid landing in hot water with a court date:
“Road users have a duty of care to each other, so keeping your cool and remaining focused is important.
“Your hands should remain on the wheel and your eyes on the road.
“Rather than let the tailgater get under your skin, where safe to do so, it is better to let them pass so you can carry on your journey in a calm manner.”
That said, keeping calm on the roads is often easier said than done! Let us know your thoughts on our Facebook Page.
