Following in the long line of recent exit themed news stories Chris Evans has announced that he is leaving Top Gear after just one season.
He made the announcement earlier via Twitter: "Stepping down from top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimnes that's not enough. The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best."
The revamped Top Gear show; and Evans in particular, has come under intense scrutiny from the press and viewers with viewer figures dwindling throughout the series culminating in only 1.9m viewers tuning in for last night's season finale.
It was going to be no mean feat to sway those that grew to love Clarkson, Hammond and May and expect them to have the same level of adoration for a new cast.
Following the decision Evans has announced that he will continue with his Radio 2 show and focus on his charitable efforts including Children in Need and CarFest.
The Top Gear host role was always going to be a poisoned chalice but what has become very apparent is that the public and mass media have got their wish sooner than was likely expected.
Now a clear direction is needed to steer the show in a new direction and take advantage of the elements that have worked throughout the first series.
Even though we aren't Chris Evans' biggest fan it would be a shame to lose a motoring show off prime time TV.
