When in doubt, quad it out. BMW has gone into the lab and emerged with its most powerful diesel engine to date rocking not two, not three but FOUR turbochargers.
This beast of an engine will be housed in the new 750d xDrive and 750Ld x Drive 7 Series models being released later this year. BMW has revealed that the engine will develop 394bhp and 760Nm of torque and can get from 0-62mph in a not too shabby 4.6 seconds.
BMW claims CO2 emissions of 45-56g/km and fuel economy of 49.6mpg. Whilst this may not initially impress you when compared to a run-of-the-mill diesel the fact that these figures can be achieved from a damn near two tonne, quad-turbo monster is pretty impressive.
The new quad-turbo diesel engine will replace the existing tri-turbo BMW diesel engine and will take advantage of smarter engineering that will move away from one ‘big’ turbo and two ‘smaller’ turbos and instead use four small turbos; two of them working at low pressure, two at high pressure. This change will help the turbos react quicker to further enhance performance.
BMW is flexing its engineering muscles and showcasing what the company can achieve. It can be argued that competitors have achieved similar results from simpler engineering but we like the fact that BMW has been bold and brave. After all, it is reaping the rewards from making the headlines…
