Almost 5 Million Cars On UK Roads Have Defective Headlights

Winter is drawing near, which brings with it reduced hours of daylight, reduced visibility and challenging road conditions. In-spite of this, a recent survey has found 4.6 million cars are being driven on UK roads with defective headlights.

The survey, conducted by Halfords, involved 2,000 UK motorists, with the findings extrapolated to reflect the 38.4 million total cars on UK roads.

Winter weather was a clear deterrent for many surveyed with 39% saying that they actively avoided night-time winter driving.

Worryingly, the survey found that 7% of respondents had never checked their headlights, with 12% having checked them infrequently (6 months or longer since last checked).

Our recommendation is to check your lights regularly and keep spare bulbs in your boot, where possible. Thankfully, modern vehicles will give you a heads up when your headlights have a blown bulb. That said, you will need to inspect the lens casing to ensure that they don’t have damage and are clean enough that light can shine through clearly.
